Many AFSCME members work in high-stress fields such as public safety, health care, emergency medical services and firefighting. Their jobs have become even more stressful since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced many of these workers to put their and their families’ well-being at risk while serving their communities.

But when these everyday heroes face mental health issues as a result of the high-stress environment and duties that expose them to trauma, they are often expected to deal with such challenges on their own.

It’s time to change that.

SEBAC (State Employee Bargaining Agent Coalition) leadership continues to advocate for pandemic hero pay that will recognize our state members’ sacrifices throughout COVID-19 and the critical role they, like all front-line workers played, in getting all of us through the worst of the pandemic.  

There is indeed strength in numbers. Just ask front-line American Red Cross blood collections workers in Connecticut, who are represented by Local 3145 of Council 4 AFSCME.

The nationwide coalition of 10 unions, representing more than 3,000 blood collection workers, ratified their contract in mid-September after more than a year of tough negotiations.

The cost of college increased tenfold since the 1970s. Meanwhile, the top 1% graduate debt-free and politicians continue to choose corporate tax breaks over funding for higher education.

Having college debt could mean having to put off saving for your own child’s college because you’re still paying for your own college debt. Or maybe you are having trouble paying your monthly bills because of a high monthly student loan payment.

For two new college students, Vanden Haviland and Bernae Webb - their future looks promising and a little more at ease.
