Agreement will continue efforts to protect and expand our communitie

The regular election of AFSCME Council 4 Executive Board members took place on April 6, 2024 at our union headquarters in New Britain, CT.

The results are as follows:

The Council 4 PEOPLE Committee elected new leadership on April 16 during the Council 4 biennial conference, including officers for each congressional district and the statewide steering committee.

As dedicated and active participants of our labor-to-labor election program, PEOPLE officers lead the committee’s electoral efforts in interviewing and endorsing labor-friendly candidates. Regardless of the office the candidates are running for, it is imperative for elected officials to support Council 4’s mission of protecting and expanding pay, retirement security and health care.

On the 55th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., AFSCME releases the “I AM Story” podcast, which describes the working conditions faced by AFSCME sanitation workers in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1968 – the year of their historic strike – and connects that seminal event to today’s struggle for economic and racial justice. The podcast also spotlights the ties between the labor and civil rights movements.

COUNCIL 4 EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIPS

To recognize the extraordinary efforts of our members and to foster unionism, Council 4 is offering continuing education assistance in the form of a $2,000 per year scholarship for up to four years (max $8,000) to dependents of Council 4 members and retirees. 

Each year, the Council 4 Scholarship Committee selects two students to award a $2,000 scholarship paid to the school of the winners.  Winners are eligible for up to four consecutive years by doing a brief presentation to the executive board.

After months of negotiations, and an arbitration hearing, we have now learned that the neutral arbitrator, Susan Meredith, has awarded the State Employees Bargaining Agent Coalition (SEBAC) our last best offer for both the “Lower-Risk” and “Higher-Risk” employees at issue.
