Nearly 8 months after the attack on the U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC, it’s important to remember what police officers endured while defending our democracy.

One of them was attacked with a flagpole and sprayed with a chemical.

Another heard someone say, “Kill him with his own gun,” before he was dragged into the crowd, beaten unconscious and repeatedly shocked with his own Taser.

A third was verbally pelted with racial slurs over and over before he was assaulted.

A fourth was crushed in a door, bashed in the head, and nearly lost an eye.

When Fran Krugen’s late husband was first diagnosed with diabetes, his insulin cost about $35 a bottle.

But Krugen, an AFSCME retiree from Arizona, will never forget the day when she and her husband went to the drug store to pick up his insulin and the pharmacist told them it now cost $900 a bottle.

“This was medication he needed to live, and we had insurance,” she said at a press briefing earlier this month. “We looked at each other and had to ask ourselves: Do we make the house payment? Do we buy food? Or do we pay for his medication?”

The parties now have a formal written agreement covering those EO-13G issues upon which they do agree, and identifying some of the issues still being disputed.

We had noted this on Sept. 20 when SEBAC and the Lamont Administration reached a conceptual agreement on some of the issues relating to the impacts of the recent Executive Order 13G concerning mandatory COVID-19 vaccinations for certain state employees

On August 19th, the Lamont Administration announced Executive Order No. 13D (EO-13D) concerning mandatory COVID-19 vaccinations of state employees who do not qualify for medical or religious exemptions.  For employees not working in state hospitals or long-term care facilities, that mandate includes the ability to refuse the vaccine as long as the employee submits to weekly COVID testing.

More Americans approve of labor unions today than at any time since 1965, according to annual Gallup poll results released around each Labor Day.

More than two-thirds of poll respondents – 68% – approved of labor unions. That means a clear majority of voters views labor unions favorably. Among adults 18-34 years of age, 77% approve of unions. Support is also high among those with annual household incomes under $40,000.

To better protect the safety of our Council 4 staff, members and visitors, Council 4 is implementing a mask mandate starting Tuesday, September 7, 2021, until further notice.  All staff and visitors must wear a mask in all areas of the building, including all meeting rooms and common areas.

We thank you for your patience and dilligence in abiding by our new policy.

The Board of Education (BOE) Union Coalition*, which includes Council 4, is reacting to Governor Ned Lamont's Executive Order No.13D (EO-13D) concerning mandatory school employee COVID-19 vaccination.

Effective September 27, 2021, EO-13D will apply to educators and school support staff who have not received at least their first dose of the vaccine. The order allows exceptions for a religious or medical exemption, as well as an alternative optional weekly testing requirement.
