Council 4 Supports Veterans OASIS at MCC

Council 4, a union representing 30,000 workers across Connecticut, has donated $2,000 to support Veterans OASIS (Operation Academic Support for Incoming Service Members) at Manchester Community College.

Sandy DeCampos of AFSCME Local 991 (Town of Manchester), a member of the Council 4 Veterans Committee, presented OASIS Program Coordinator Michelle LaBelle with the donation from the union’s Veterans Committee.

“This donation from AFSCME Council 4 is extremely generous and sincerely appreciated, and will go a long way in providing upgrades to our OASIS Center and other necessary resources for our new and returning veterans and military service men and women,” LaBelle said. “The college is very grateful for the support and we look forward to our continued work together.”

MCC’s Veterans OASIS provides a dedicated, supportive space for veterans and military service men and women to network, socialize, study and share, as they integrate into the college experience. At MCC and throughout Connecticut’s public universities and college system, OASIS is a place for veterans to socialize, study and receive mentoring, or become a mentor to other veterans.

“The support that OASIS provides veterans returning to higher education is invaluable,” DeCampos, who also serves as a Council 4 Vice President, said. “I’m proud our committee was able to make this donation to help men and women who have served our country.”

Council 4’s standing Veterans Committee is charged with mobilizing support for veteran organizations and causes throughout the year. Committee members are currently preparing for the union’s 16th annual Veterans Picnic, scheduled for May 25, 2019 at the State Veterans Home in Rocky Hill. At this event, AFSCME puts on a huge barbeque for veterans residing at the Rocky Hill facility.

“We are pleased to support the OASIS program at Manchester Community College,” Council 4 Executive Director Jody Barr said. “It reflects our union’s commitment to making a difference for military veterans in Connecticut.”
