Meriden, CT-- The members of Local 749 of Council 4 AFSCME, representing 1,500 employees in the state Judicial Branch, Criminal Justice and Public Defenders divisions, has donated $749 to support Helping People Excel, Inc., a private, Meriden-based agency that assists people with disabilities and their families.

“Due to state budget cuts, Local 749’s generous donation will allow us to provide much needed items for our day and sensory programs that will certainly enrich the lives of the people we serve,” said Terry Sciola, Executive Director of Helping People Excel. “We deeply appreciate the support of the dedicated state employee union members.”

Established in 2007, Helping People Excel, Inc. provides people with disabilities a variety of individualized care services, including residential companion service, supported employment, personal support and respite care.

“The staff at Helping People Excel does amazing work for people in our community,” said AFSCME Local 749 President Charles DellaRocco, a police officer at the State Supreme Court. “Our union is proud and blessed to be able to support their vital mission at a time when budget cuts have made it harder for human and social service agencies to help Connecticut’s most vulnerable citizens.”

Local 749 is an affiliated union of Council 4 AFSCME (American Federation of State, County & Municipal Employees), which represents 35,000 workers in state and local government and the private sector. Learn more about AFSCME Local 749 at www.local749.org and on Facebook at Local 749.
