Correctional Union Comments on Closing of Enfield C.I.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 7, 2017

Collin Provost, President of the Connecticut State Prison Employees Union, AFSCME Local 391 issued the following statement in response to the Department of Correction’s announcement today that it plans to close Enfield Correctional Institution:

“The DOC’s decision to close Enfield Correctional is not surprising but gives us reason to be concerned from a broader policy standpoint.

“We are monitoring the situation so as to ensure that all aspects of the closure are handled properly, safely and in accordance with our collective bargaining agreement for all our staff.

“While we understand the reasons behind the decision to close Enfield CI, we are still saddened by the news and empathetic towards the staff who are negatively impacted. AFSCME Local 391 members are invested in this facility, the community and in the Department’s public mission.

“We will remain vigilant. We will not hesitate to speak out if the continued reduction of the inmate population compromises the safety and security of staff, inmates or the community.”
