We Make Connecticut Happen

Gardening As Therapy

Local 2663 members Scott Mason and Jonathan Alberto get ready for the spring plant sale.

Kudos to the vocational rehabilitation counselors at Connecticut Valley Hospital in Middletown.

Members of AFSCME Local 2663, these state workers have launched a remarkably successful program at CVH in which they help patients plant, nurture and sell flowers and vegetables throughout the year.

The patients earn the state minimum wage with proceeds from the sale benefiting CVH's special patient activity fund.

"Many of the patients find jobs in nurseries," after they rejoin the community, according to voc-rehab counselor and Local 2663 union steward Paul Bellantuono.
