U.S. Senate vote saves jobs

Members of Local 1303-44 (Winchester Public Works)provide great public services.

Council 4 members had their voice heard as the U.S. Senate on March 10 voted to pass the “The American Workers, States and Business Relief Act."

This vote provides $26 billion to the states to save jobs and help America’s working families. Just as importantly, it helps states pay for unemployment insurance and Medicaid programs that are being cut to the bone.

“Across the country, state and local governments are slashing programs that help the unemployed and the working poor survive the Bush Recession. This bill provides a real lifeline for the people who need these services," said AFSCME International President Gerald McEntee.

State and local governments continue to face massive budget shortfalls that threaten critical public services in every community across the country.

Legislators listen as Council 4 Executive Director speaks at a press conference calling for increased investmentin public services.

Leaders in the House of Representatives need to receive more phone calls from members like you. Please dial 1-888-460-0813 and ask to be connected to your Member of Congress. Urge your Representative to support aid to state and local governments like their colleagues in the Senate did, and ask them to support emergency funding for the State Fiscal Stabilization Fund.
