Assessing the 2014 Election

Nov. 5, 2014:
Governor Dannel P. Malloy and Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman won a second term in office thanks in large part to the efforts of Council 4 union members who volunteered their time and energy to prevent Tom Foley's "Wisconsin Moment" from happening in Connecticut.

Through surveys, phone banks, door knocking and post cards and home mailings, we made sure every member knew what was at stake, and encouraged them to turn out in force for Election Day.

In addition Malloy and Wyman, Council 4 played also played a crucial role in electing:

  • State Comptroller Kevin Lembo
  • State Treasurer Denise Nappier
  • Secretary of State Denise Merrill
  • Attorney General George Jepsen

As Council 4 Executive Director Sal Luciano noted, "Across the country, in states like Wisconsin, Illinois and Florida, candidates with anti-worker agendas and their wealthy interest groups won elections. We kept these attacks out of Connecticut. Our members got the job done and protected the decades of progress working people have made in our state."

Of the 84 candidates we endorsed for office in Connecticut, 74 prevailed in their races, providing further confirmation of our success in combating the anti-union tide rolling through other states.

"We can take pride in what we’ve accomplished," Luciano added, "but we know that in the weeks and months ahead there’s work to be done. As we look to the future, we will continue to dedicate our efforts to protecting public services and the rights of working people across Connecticut. Part of that means holding elected officials accountable."
