A Sea of AFSCME Green

Corrections Local 391 members were among hundreds of union members at the Capitol April 23.

The State Capitol in Hartford was awash in a sea of AFSCME green April 23 as Council 4 members made their voice heard as one during our annual legislative lobby day.

Gov. Daniel Malloy greeted the crowd with "AFSCME is in the house!" as he spoke to union members.

Members lobbied their legislators on a number of important issues, such as expanding retirement security for all, stopping unfair increases to the municipal pension system, including post traumatic stress disorder coverage under workers' compensation, establishing community and worker protections for private hospital conversions, designing a curriculum for  labor education in our schools, and granting probate court employees the right to organize.

"We must fight – and we will fight -- not just for ourselves, but for those who have gone before us and those who will come after us," Council 4 Executive Director Sal Luciano exhorted. "Why? Because we are union-proud, and middle class proud."

The 2014 General Assembly session adjourns May 7.

Be sure to contact your legislators today and urge them to pass SB 249, which would provide retirement security for all workers.
