President Obama signed into law sweeping health care reform legislation that AFSCME is hailing as "a major milestone in the struggle to break the power of the insurance industry and provide quality, affordable health care for millions of American families."
Council 4 and six other unions have taken out newspaper advertisements opposing the proposed excise tax on middle class health care benefits. Lois O'Connor of Council 4's Retiree Chapter calls out Sen. Joe Lieberman for putting insurance companies ahead of people. Our push for health care reform continues with a new AFL-CIO TV ad that sends a clear message: “Pass Health Care. Don’t Tax Health Benefits.” Americans United for Change and AFSCME have launched television ads backing up members of Congress, including U.S. Rep Chris Murphy (CT-5), who voted for the Affordable Health Care for America Act.
In a vote AFSCME called "real progress in the fight for health care reform," the House of Representatives voted to pass HR 3962, the Affordable Health Care for America Act. The bill is headed to the U.S. Senate.
One of the principles that must be at the heart of health care reform is making sure it’s paid for fairly. Unfortunately, some members of Congress are trying to fund it in the wrong way—by taxing working families’ health benefits AFSCME-backed Health Care for America Now (HCAN), the nation’s largest health care campaign, launched the next phase in its ongoing “Sick of It” push for insurance accountability, focusing on rich health insurance CEOs making millions and living in luxury while middle class families are struggling.
Continuing pressure leads to override of Gov. Rell's veto of SustiNet, Connecticut's universal health care bill.
