New London Book Drive A Great Success

L-R: Kathy Harrington (AFSCME Local 1378), Tina Salcedo (New London Youth Affairs/Whale's Tales) and Cynthia Johnson (AFSCME Local 1378).

New London, CT, June 8, 2010 – The campaign to encourage summer reading and promote literacy among New London school children got a big boost thanks to a book drive sponsored by AFSCME Local 1378, the New London Public Works Union, and Whales Tales, a program of the city’s Youth Affairs Department.

According to Tina Salcedo, New London’s Early Education and Literacy Coordinator, local citizens and businesses donated more than 800 books for distribution to New London children, ranging from infants to high school students.

“Our goal as a union was to encourage summer reading and literacy,” said Kathleen Harrington, City Purchasing Assistant and AFSCME Local 1378 Executive Board member. “The book drive was a tremendous success thanks to the efforts of all involved and the entire southeastern Connecticut community.”

Harrington and Cynthia Johnson, a Police Records Clerk and Local 1378 member, coordinated the local union’s effort with Whales Tales.

“Many of us who work for the city grew up and attended schools here. We have an interest in making sure students develop their reading skills,” Johnson added.

Whale’s Tales is distributing books through the New London school system, but is also continuing to collect new and gently used books to restock their shelves. The book bank is open Monday-Friday from 9am-3pm and other times by appointment. Please call New London Youth Affairs at 860-447-0459 for more information or to donate books.

“We are truly grateful to the AFSCME Local 1378 membership for supporting our efforts to improve literacy and reading skills,” Salcedo said.
