New Haven, CT, Dec. 20, 2011 – AFSCME Local 287, representing New Haven school custodians and maintenance workers, is brightening the holidays for students with the presentation of special gift cards paid for by union members.

Local 287 members are presenting $25 gift debit cards to 32 students – 2 each from 16 randomly selected schools. Those schools are Barnard, Beecher, Celentano, Clinton Avenue, Columbus, Daniels, Fair Haven, Hill Central, Jepson, King Robinson, Martinez, Nathan Hale, Sheridan-Mauro, Ross-Woodward, Strong and Truman.

“We work for the schools and the students,” said Mark Bohannon, union vice president and head custodian at High School in the Community. “This is a way for us to give back to the community that employs us. We hope the gifts will bring some smiles to the kids’ faces.”

“This is our fourth straight year doing something for the kids,” added Local 287 member and Edgewood School custodian Rafael “RC” Crespo. “We wish we could more, but I’m proud of our union members for caring. We’re all here for the kids.”

School principals like Denise Coles-Cross at Sheridan-Mauro Magnet School selected the students and present them with their gift cards.

“Mauro-Sheridan has a family environment. The custodians are part of the family that has helped to nurture our students to be productive and responsible citizens,” said Cross, who joined Bohannon, Crespo and Sheridan-Mauro students Zamaya Harrison and Jamel Lowery for the presentation of the union’s gift cards.
