Council 4 Announces 2016 Candidate Endorsements
New Britain, CT, Oct. 5, 2016 – Council 4 of the American Federation of State, County & Municipal Employees (AFSCME), representing more than 35,000 workers across Connecticut, today announced its candidate endorsements for the Connecticut General Assembly.
Council 4’s Delegate Assembly – made up of the union’s rank-and-file membership – voted Sept. 30 to approve those candidates recommended for endorsement by members of the union’s political action steering committee.
Candidates seeking the Council 4 endorsement filled out our union's questionnaire and participated in interviews with Council 4 members.
Four AFSCME members are among those who received the union’s endorsement: State Rep. Joe Aresimowicz of Local 3145 (D-30, Berlin/Southington) and first-time General Assembly candidates Michael DiMassa of Local 681 (D-116, West Haven/New Haven), Sean Ronan of Local 1159 (D-117, West Haven/Milford/Orange) and James Tedford of Local 1471 (R-56, Vernon/Rockville).
Council 4 Executive Director Sal Luciano said the candidate endorsement process reflected a sense of urgency heading into the Nov. 8 election.
“We face incredibly important choices in this election year,” Luciano said. “Union members must be engaged to ensure we have a legislature committed to protecting Connecticut's quality of life for correctional officers, school paraprofessionals and all working class families — not just hedge fund managers and insurance executives — over the next two years.”
Council 4 plans to mobilize its membership through a variety of means, including in-district mailings to its members’ households, member-to-member phone banks and labor walks in communities across the state.
