Protecting Services, Rebuilding the Middle Class

The Connecticut General Assembly convened its 2013 legislative session on Jan. 9. The session ends June 5.

Having met in late December to eliminate the state's $415 million budget deficit, lawmakers must face the challenge posed by the deficit.

Along with our allies from the Better Choices for Connecticut Coalition, Council 4 will continue the push for a fair budget that protects public services, taxes wealth equitably and closes corporate tax loopholes.

Pointing to the fact that state and local government employees have made gigantic pay and benefit concessions, Council 4 Executive Director Sal Luciano said it's time for some balance:

Council 4’s wide-ranging legislative agenda for 2013 also includes:

  • Establishing a state-administered pension plan for private sector workers.
  • Strengthening the State Contracting Standards Board to prevent corrupt, wasteful privatization.
  • Protecting services and jobs by maintaining current funding levels for Connecticut's cities and towns.
  • Winning collective bargaining rights probate court employees and legislative management employees.

As always, we will be vigilant in fending off anticipated attacks on collective bargaining rights, including consolidations and mergers that weaken state and local services.
